War sickle

German war sickle

Today we present an unusual but not infrequently occurring war sickle, which was a peasant weapon. It is unusual because its shape resembles a crescent. More frequent forms have rather an elongated, slightly curved blade.

The “Deutsche Historische Museum” has two such typical war sickles in stock, which can be seen here and here.

The famous auction house Herrmann Historica offered a similar war sickle in April 2009, but with wooden stock, which is from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The socket edges have been forged overlapping. The socket itself is conical to the blade, so that the wooden shaft had to be sharpened.
